The Chicago Cubs Ace Carlos Zambrano suffered a loss last night, as the Cubs could only muster 1 run against DBacks Ace Brandon Webb. Zambrano allowed 1 run on 4 hits, struck out 8, and walked only 1 batter. Which begs the question, "Why did he only pitch 6 innings?" Brandon Webb allowed the same number of runs, on the same number of hits, walked 3 and pitched 7 innings in an equally stellar performance.
Tonight Ted Lilly takes the mound against Doug Davis. Lilly could be called the Cubs second Ace. His ERA is slightly below Zambrano's at 3.83. His 15-8 record is better than Zambrano's, percentage wise. His control is undoubtedly better, walking half as many batters with only 3 less strikeouts.
Doug Davis has control issues, walking 95 batters in 192.2 innings. His record sits just above .500, with 13 wins against 12 losses.
The Cubs are sending out Ace number two against a jack at best. This paired with the DBacks offensive struggles should tip the scales in the Cubs favor. Look for both teams to head into Wrigley tied on Saturday.
